The State Employees Association of North Carolina has a simple explanation for the raft of vacant positions in state government: poor pay.<\/p>\n

A dashboard released by SEANC on Wednesday compiles findings from State Auditor Dave Boliek\u2019s January report on long-term vacancies in state government, arguing that the auditor\u2019s inquiry vindicates their assertion that inadequate salaries are the primary reason many of North Carolina\u2019s government positions go unfilled.<\/p>\n

\u201cState Auditor Dave Boliek\u2019s report shows what we have long argued: North Carolina\u2019s vacancy problem is a pay problem,\u201d said SEANC Executive Director Ardis Watkins. \u201cThe auditor himself recommends that the state bring salaries in line with neighboring states and appropriate additional funds where vacancy rates are high.\u201d<\/p>\n

As of last August, 8,845 positions had been vacant for more than six months, representing about 11% of the state workforce, according to the dashboard and Boliek\u2019s report. More than a third of those long-term vacancies were attributed to low compensation, the number one cause identified in the auditor\u2019s report.<\/p>\n

The dashboard was released just after Republican lawmakers announced a budget framework that will include an average 3% pay raise for state government employees, with higher increases in some of the areas Boliek identified as especially underpaid.<\/p>\n
