Rep. Sarah Stevens (R-Surry) is resigning from the North Carolina House of Representatives effective June 16 as she vies for a seat on the state Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter careful consideration, I have decided to devote my full time and energy to my campaign for the North Carolina Supreme Court,\u201d Stevens wrote in her resignation letter. \u201cI believe this next step will allow me to continue serving the people of North Carolina and upholding the rule of law in a new capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether Stevens will succeed in her bid to unseat incumbent Justice Anita Earls \u2014 one of two Democrats on the state\u2019s highest court \u2014 is far from certain, particularly as Republicans across the state face an uphill battle to win over an electorate dissatisfied with President Donald Trump\u2019s war in Iran and high prices at home.<\/p>\n

A March 2026 Catawba College-YouGov poll found that 43% of likely voters surveyed said they would vote for the Democratic candidate in the state Supreme Court race, while 36% indicated support for the Republican candidate.<\/p>\n
