North Carolina Democratic state senators and advocates gathered Tuesday, the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court case that enshrined access to contraception as a constitutional right, to warn that 61 years later, that right could once again be at risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sens. <\/span>Sophia Chitlik (D-Durham), Woodson Bradley (D-<\/span>Mecklenburg),<\/span> and Natalie Murdock (D-Durham) all spoke about the importance of protecting rights to contraception. The three also co-sponsored <\/span>Senate Bill 413<\/span> which, if passed, would codify the\u00a0 access to contraception granted in Griswold v. Connecticut into North Carolina law.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe promise of Griswold was that these deeply personal decisions belong to individuals, not politicians. Today, we are here to say that promise still matters, and we will continue fighting to protect that here in North Carolina and beyond,\u201d Murdock said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Their push to protect access to contraception is in response, they say, to a <\/span>nationwide rollback and challenges to abortion rights and access to contraception, the result of\u00a0 a 2021 Supreme Court decision that overturned the constitutional right to an abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in his concurring opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization,<\/span> which overturned Roe v. Wade,\u00a0 that the right to privacy in Roe should itself be called into question. He said the Supreme Court \u201cshould reconsider\u201d other rulings in that light, including Griswold.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the years since the Dobbs decision, 14 states have opened the door to challenges to contraceptives by affirming that life begins at the point of conception. Alabama led the charge after its supreme court ruled that life started at fertilization. The case targeted IVF treatments, but critics have said the ruling could also threaten access to IUDs, a form of contraception that prevents the implantation of a fertilized egg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month, North Carolina <\/span>Rep. Keith Kidwell (R-Beaufort) and Rep. Ben Moss (R-Richmond) sponsored <\/span>House Bill 1232<\/span>, which would allow voters in November to amend the constitution to define human life as starting at the moment of conception. Moss later removed himself as a primary sponsor after the bill received significant social media criticism.<\/span><\/p>\n
