Aviation startup JetZero broke ground on its manufacturing facility and headquarters in Greensboro on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The company\u2019s operations are expected to create more than 14,500 aerospace manufacturing jobs, the largest economic development in North Carolina history based on job commitment, according to Gov. Josh Stein\u2019s office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JetZero\u2019s planned $4.7 billion investment into its Greensboro facilities is projected to boost the state\u2019s economy by more than $250 billion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday, a great new chapter in North Carolina\u2019s storied history of flight is taking off,\u201d Stein said at the groundbreaking. \u201cJetZero\u2019s decision to build here is a vote of confidence in North Carolina\u2019s workforce, our universities and community colleges, and our long aerospace tradition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

JetZero is known for pioneering a unique commercial \u201call-wing\u201d or \u201cblended wing body\u201d jet, a stingray-esque design where the fuselage and wings flow together. It\u2019s a project spearheaded by the U.S. Air Force and projected to begin flying in 2027, according to JetZero\u2019s <\/span>website<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Z4 planes are designed to consume less fuel \u2014\u00a0JetZero <\/span>claims<\/span> the design will cut the fuel bill in half \u2014 and produce fewer emissions than traditional passenger aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n

Major airlines like United and Delta have invested in the company. The jets could help airlines offer affordable tickets despite rising fuel costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JetZero will build those planes at what\u2019s planned to be an 8-million-square-foot complex covering more than 600 acres near Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro. The company will also relocate its headquarters from California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s groundbreaking marks the beginning of a project that will prove to be a leader in both aerospace and advanced materials,\u201d North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley said.<\/span><\/p>\n
