WASHINGTON \u2014 Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday the risk of a member of the general public contracting hantavirus remains low despite several passengers on a cruise ship becoming infected with the disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dr. Brendan Jackson, an epidemiologist and the agency\u2019s team lead in Nebraska, said Americans who were on the MV Hondius cruise ship after others were diagnosed with the illness were flown to the National Quarantine Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.<\/p>\n

Healthcare providers at the site have been talking with each passenger about whether they may have been exposed to any of the people with confirmed cases. They\u2019re also monitoring the Americans for fevers or other symptoms.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis particular virus has a long incubation period, so the monitoring period is 42 days,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cAnd the 42 days started with the departure of the ship, so May 11 was day one.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
